14 May

SIBU, May 14 — A 65-year-old man was fined a total of RM2,000 in default three months jail by the magistrate’s court here today, for punching the leader of a polling team and later lodging a false police report.

Malcolm Maing pleaded guilty to the two offences before Zubaidah Sharkawi.

He committed the offences at 7.45am during the just-concluded 13th General Election on May 5.

The retired civil servant from Rh. Ranggau in Sungai Assan near here had caused hurt, thus contravening Section 329 of the Penal Code, and lodged a false police report, an offence under Section 182 of the same code.

Inspector Mohd Fazirul Mohd Fisol, the investigating officer (IO) of the case, told the court that on May 5, Malcolm had heard from the public that Petrus Amping, the leader of the polling team at SK Nanga Assan, had told the people there not to vote for the Barisan Nasional.

Malcolm met Petrus and asked him to explain his action. – Bernama
