All eyes on Umno assembly as polls draw near

Najib will give his presidential briefing on November 27. — File picKUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — The 2012 Umno general assembly next month is expected to attract extraordinary attention with the general election just round the corner.

A total 2,674 delegates are expected to camp at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from November 26 to December 1, among others to listen to the last message of the party leadership before the next general election.

Umno executive secretary Datuk Abdul Rauf Yusoh said the gathering was expected to be covered by 2,000 local and foreign journalists.

“Last year, 1,700 local and foreign media representatives covered the event. This year, we expect 2,000 from the media to be involved,” he said at the media co-ordinating meeting in conjunction with the 2012 Umno general assembly at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, PWTC, here, today.

The gathering would begin with the Premier Information Seminar on November 24 to be opened by Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

This would be followed by the Third International Forum on November 26 and 27 to be attended by representatives from 27 nations.

The Presidential Briefing on November 27, which would be held behind closed doors, was among the events awaited by the delegates as Najib was expected to give his message to the Umno “war machinery”, which would be heading to “the mother of all general elections”.

On the same day, the 2012 Wanita Umno, Umno Youth and Puteri Umno general assemblies will be held at the Dewan Merdeka, before the main general assembly the following day.

The 2012 Umno general assembly will officially start on November 29 and go on up to December 1 with numerous political, economic, educational and religious issues touched upon by the delegates. — Bernama
